I Wonder As I Wander

"See how the rain falls; who made the sky? It's neverending, and you wonder why. Where did it come from? Where will it go, where will it go? Don't you wish you had the answers?"

Thus sang Keith Green in one of his many good songs. Spending time outdoors away from human artifice naturally brings many questions to the mind, though few can be articulated in words. I don't quite understand what this vast, amazing world is for. Why so beautiful, so diverse, so filled simultaneously with things shockingly lovely and hateful?

Keith says, "Look out past the stars--look to the one who put them there. He made them all and he gave them to us to share. Yes, he made them all, and he's gonna take them all back someday."

Meanwhile, they are here. Birds are just one branch of this creation, and though they are likely the most beautiful, they would not be the same without the other branches. While Courtney and I were out on Saturday, we saw a hundred different varieties of insects: breathtaking dragonflies, delicate damselflies, intriguing walkingsticks. Why did God do it all? To delight himself, ourselves, or both?

This kingbird sat calmly on the fence as I drove by in the park. I tried to capture him with my film camera, and this is the result of a digital remastering and crop from that picture. You can imagine the distance I have to go in the photography field.

Poor, dear park ducks. The tennis courts overlook the stream, and the waterbirds have come under fire more than once at my hand. They endure much for all the free food.

"Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths, lightning and hail, snow and clouds, stormy winds that do his bidding, you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars, wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds, kings of the earth and all nations, you princes and all rulers on earth, young men and maidens, old men and children."

How can they help it?
